Thank you for your interest in a career in fire, medical, and rescue services.  The Personnel Board Merit System and its 15 fire and rescue departments are seeking motivated individuals to join their teams as a Firefighter or a Fire Paramedic.  If you are honor-driven, committed to the betterment of our communities, able to work effectively in a tight-knit team environment, and possess the necessary attributes to effectively handle critical emergency situations, then a career in the fire and rescue service may be for you.  We encourage you to explore this site to learn more about becoming a Firefighter or a Fire Paramedic.

Don't have a paramedic license? 

Fire Paramedics are in high demand and becoming a licensed paramedic is a significant step in gaining employment within a Fire & Rescue Department.  If you are interested in a career within the fire & rescue services, but do not have a paramedic license, we encourage you to explore becoming licensed as a paramedic and consider enrolling in a paramedic program offered by a number of community colleges in the State of Alabama.  Click any of the colleges below to learn more.

The job.

A career as a Firefighter or Fire Paramedic is a career in which you can truly make a difference - a difference in your life, a difference in the lives of others, and a difference in your community.  It is not simply a job, it is a career with serious responsibilities and a career that can truly bring out the best in you. 

Firefighters and Fire Paramedics play a vital role in maintaining the safety and protection of our communities by responding to emergencies and disasters such as fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, floods, and other natural disasters, just to name a few.  Firefighters and Fire Paramedics perform a range of duties, including responding to fires, rescuing people and animals from dangerous situations, providing emergency medical care, and educating the public on fire safety.  Firefighters and Fire Paramedics work in teams, with each member contributing their skills and expertise to ensure that the job is done safely and efficiently.

While the challenges and demands of the job are real, as a Firefighter or Fire Paramedic, you will be expertly trained to respond to any emergency situation. You will also be provided meaningful opportunities to advance in your career through a clear rank structure.  Being a Firefighter or Fire Paramedic will ask a lot of you, but it will provide so much in return.  You'll have a feeling of accomplishment in knowing that through your work and efforts your community will be be safer. Despite the challenges and risks, the job of a firefighter is incredibly rewarding. Firefighters and Fire Paramedics have the satisfaction of knowing that they are making a real difference in their communities, and they often form close bonds with their fellow coworkers and the people they serve. It is a job that requires dedication, hard work, and sacrifice, but for those who are up to the challenge, it can be one of the most fulfilling careers one could choose.  By seeking to join one of our 15 fire departments in the Greater Birmingham area (listed in the following section), you are taking an active step toward building a stronger and safer community and establishing a meaningful and secure career.
